SYBIL SCOTT SEWARD

Aug. 12, 1943-Nov. 15, 2012

Sybil Scott Seward, 515 Bunche Drive, Goldsboro, passed Thursday afternoon at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. Dr. Dwight B. Cannon officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 12, 1943, to Mr. and Mrs. A. Martel Scott, and lived most of her life in Goldsboro. She graduated from Dillard High School in 1961 and graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. After graduation, she returned to Goldsboro to work with her parents in the family restaurant, Scott's Barbecue. She loved the business and enjoyed the many patrons who visited them, one of whom became her husband of 40 years. She continued running the restaurant and the barbecue sauce business along with her brother, Martel Jr., and nephew, Martel III, after the loss of both parents.

Sybil was a lifelong member of the Goldsboro chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She was also a very active member of St. James AME Zion Church here in Goldsboro; she was associated with several committees and organizations at her church. She was church steward, a member of the finance committee, past president of the conference workers, member of three choirs: the Unity Choir, Gospel Choir and Voices of Zion, and served on several special-day committees, like Women's Day, Homecoming and Family and Friends Day. She was always instrumental in providing food for these special occasions and even served specially prepared meals for bishops during conference gatherings.

Sybil was chosen as honorary chairman of the Wayne County Relay for Life campaign for 2012. Sybil was a 21-year survivor of cancer, was proud to let people know she was a survivor, and helped her team raise thousands of dollars toward the fight to eradicate cancer.

Sybil leaves her beloved husband, Eugene; her son and daughter-in-law, Tre' and Misty Seward, and her precious grandson, Lewis, of Rock Hill, S.C. She also leaves her brother, Alvin Martel Scott Jr. (Sandra) of Goldsboro; nephews and niece, Alvin Martel Scott III, of Goldsboro, Ingrid Scott Harrison (Calvin) of Glenn Dale, Md., Sean Patrick Scott (Pamela) of Charlotte, James Dozier Scott Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; and four grandnieces and nephews, Alexander Calvin Harrison and Christina Ingrid Harrison of Glenn Dale, Md., and Cameron Michael Scott and Brittany Kristine Scott of Charlotte; and sister-in-law, Ingrid Finley Scott of Los Angeles, Calif.

In addition to her parents, Sybil was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Ernest Scott (May 17, 1970) and James D. "Jimmy" Scott (June 15, 2005).

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, P.O. Box 335, Goldsboro, NC 27533, the Wayne County Relay for Life organization, or the American Cancer Society.
