CORNELL JONES SMITH

PIKEVILLE -- Cornell Jones Smith, 88, passed away on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Wake Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Cornell was born in Wayne County on March 28, 1924 to the late Nathan Isaac Jones and Lula Westbrook Jones. She was married to the late Milford Leroy Smith, who preceded her in death on May 2, 1997. Cornell was a longtime member of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church. She was devoted to her church and was involved in many activities where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God. Cornell enjoyed the many opportunities she had to keep children and she nurtured 58 infants as a foster parent. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be missed.

A service celebrating Cornell's life will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Stallings officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service in the fellowship hall where the family will greet family and friends. Interment will be in the Pikeville Cemetery.

Cornell is survived by her daughter, Nancy S. Adams and husband, Jimmy of Goldsboro; her son, Milford Eugene Smith and wife, Wanda; her grandsons, Scott Adams and wife, Karen, Chad Adams and wife, Stefanie, Shane Smith and wife, Kacy and Patrick Smith; her great-grandchildren, Carson Adams, Jack Adams, Taylor Smith, Andrew Taylor, Ashley Taylor and Lee Ann Sager and her great-great grandchildren, Taylor Daughtry and Jaxon Myers. She is also survived by a special nephew, Gordon Harrell and wife, Jo Ann and many more special nieces and nephews who Aunt Cornell loved dearly.

In addition to her parents and husband, Cornell was preceded in death by her sisters, Emily Edwards, Mantha Parnell and Flossie Harrell and her brothers, James Jones and Melvin Jones.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Chang and her assistants. Love and heartfelt thanks is also expressed to her caregivers, Kathy Lewis, Shelton Denning, Vickie Stamatis and Arlene Rose.
