HELEN "MARIE" MERCER BASS
Died Oct. 19, 2012
Helen "Marie" Mercer Bass passed away in the comfort of her home on Friday morning, Oct. 19, 2012 at the age of 82.
A service to celebrate her life will be held today, Oct. 21, 2012, at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 until 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
Until the Lord called her home, she was at peace surrounded by family and friends. She was a very strong, independent, vibrant mother, grandmother and friend.
Marie was born to the late Marvin Mercer and the late Ellen Lucas Mercer.
Marie was married to the late Lanace William "Dick" Bass. Marie was preceded in death by her brothers, Royce Mercer and J.M. Mercer; and a precious grandson, Paul Crumpler Bass.
Marie is survived by her son William Randy Bass and his wife, Rachel Bass, of Eureka; her daughter Gale Bass Pate and her husband, Leland Kimble Pate, of Fremont; her grandchildren, William Brian Bass of Eureka, Leland Kristopher Pate and his wife, Candace Pate, of Goldsboro, Lisa Marie Pate Gardner and her husband, Jonathan Gardner, of Pikeville; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Kennan Hildebrandt, Nathan Brock Gardner, Collin James Gardner, and Lanace Kendle Pate.
She is also survived by her sisters, Frances Pittman and her husband, Henry, of Kenly; Peggy Pate and her husband, Gene, of Lucama; her Aunt Evelyn Strickland of Wilson and beloved sister-in-law, Ida Gray Mercer of Black Creek.
Mrs. Bass grew up in Black Creek but Eureka was her home. She was a member of Eureka United Methodist Church and a member of the Country Church Quilters. She loved her quilting friends, spending time with her family, and listening to gospel music, especially when sung by her son-in-law, Kimble Pate. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cleaning churches and houses. She enjoyed being outside and was known for her immaculate yard! Marie's appearance matched her yard as she always looked her best.
Mrs. Bass' family is blessed to have had the Eureka community in her life. Randy and Gale knew she was loved and respected. No one is a stranger within the Eureka community and all of the kind words and actions are truly appreciated. She will be greatly missed.
