LAZARUS KING 'KAY' STALLINGS III

BURLINGTON -- Lazarus King Stallings III, better known as Kay, died Sept. 13, 2012, at the University of North Carolina Hospital from complications caused by an accident at a baseball game.

He was born in Goldsboro April 15, 1944, to the late Lazarus King Stallings Jr. and Ruby Nunn Stallings. He grew up there with his twin brother, Ray, and graduated from Goldsboro High School. He went on to graduate from Barton College in 1967, earned a master's degree from Trenton State University and studied toward a doctorate at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the 1980s.

He was an avid educator who worked as a middle school health and PE teacher in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for more than 25 years.

Kay's greatest passion was his family.

He is survived by his two beloved daughters, Erin Goedhart-Stallings and husband, Rene, of Groningen, Netherlands, and Brooke Stallings Barksdale and husband, Drew, of Raleigh; his brother, Ray Stallings and wife, Mary Sue, of Lexington; and his fiancée, Jeannette Amash of Haw River.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Andy and Kate Barksdale of Raleigh, and his nephew, Lenny Stallings and wife, Katie, of Concord.

His other loves were East Carolina University Pirate football, reading good novels and traveling.

After retirement, Kay enjoyed spending time with his fiancée, Jeannette Amash, as well as visiting friends and family.

Visitation will take place Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro, followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the University of North Carolina NeuroCare Fund for Excellence through The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, 8800 MLK Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill, N.C., 27514.
