AYDEN -- Mr. Leslie Atkinson Jr., 54, lovingly known by his family and friends as "Dubbie," 316 Sixth St., Ayden, departed his earthly life peacefully Monday, June 4, 2012, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

"Dubbie" was born in Wayne County April 15, 1958, to the late Atha Reid Atkinson and Leslie Atkinson Sr.

Leslie attended Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson and graduated from the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton.

As a young man, Leslie worked as a landscaper, and was often called the "shade tree mechanic."

Funeral service will be conducted Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Mount Zion Church Ministries, 323 Whitfield Drive, Goldsboro. Apostle Edwin Newsome will officiate. Interment will follow in Old Mill Cemetery, 2929 Central Heights Road, Goldsboro.

Also, a public viewing will be held Friday, June 8, 2012, at McIntyre Funeral Home and Florist, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro, from 2 to 6 p.m., with the family present to receive friends and other family members from 5 to 6 p.m.

Mr. Atkinson leaves to cherish his loving and precious memories his daughters, Kimberly Sheffield and Valerie Howell; a devoted son, Mark Howell; his father, Leslie Atkinson Sr. of Raleigh; five sisters, Leslie Sharon Arrington and husband, Michael, of Raleigh, Anne Edwards and husband, Herb, of Silver Spring, Md., Nellie Uzzell and husband, Ben, of Richmond, Va., Jodi Proctor of Rockville, Md., and Wende Yelverton and husband, Robert, of Goldsboro; three brothers, Ronald Atkinson of New Haven, Conn., Keith Atkinson of Washington, D.C., and John G. Atkinson of Fredericksburg, Va.; a grandson, Jaayden Mclean; four aunts, Dollie Ruth Greenfield, Annie Doris Smith and Juanita A. Atkinson all of Goldsboro and Lupe Atkinson of New Mexico; his special life partner, Sharon McLawhorn; uncle, Larry Thomas Reid of Washington, D.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will assemble at the residence of pastors Robert and Wende Yelverton, 710 Buck Swamp Road, Goldsboro, one hour prior to the funeral at 11:50 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession.
