MARLENE HILL BOUTWELL

March 2 1924 - April 6 2012

MOUNT OLIVE -- Marlene Hill Boutwell, 88, passed away on the morning of Good Friday, April 6, 2012, while at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Monday night, April 9, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Hobbs officiating, followed by visitation. At other times, family and friends will be received at the home of Doug and Joyce Hill at 314 E. James St. in Mount Olive. A private interment will take place in the Snow Hill Church Cemetery.

Marlene was a native of Duplin County. She was the daughter of the late Coy and Adeline Blizzard Hill, and the widow of Carl Phillip Boutwell. In early adulthood, she left the familiar sights and sounds of Duplin County to venture into a life of her own, settling in the Gulf of Mexico. She found that she loved the Gulf and it was there that she spent the majority of her working career as a tug boat cook, tending to those working on oil drilling rigs. Later in life, she was a restaurant manager and ultimately operated her own baking shop. Upon retirement she returned "home" to reside with a brother and sister-in-law in Mount Olive and, again, began worshipping just as she had as a child at Snow Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

She is survived by an adopted son, Ray Jernigan of Pensicola, Fla.; four sisters, Frances H. Herring of Kinston, Adeline H. Taylor of Stantonsburg, Violet H. Saviak of Mount Olive, and Letha H. Outlaw of Seven Springs; five brothers, Clayton Hill of Las Vegas, Nev., Tommie Hill of Wilmington, Bill Hill of Spring Lake, Douglas Hill of Mount Olive, and Joe Hill of Pikeville; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie H. Herring; an infant sister; and four brothers, Edward Hill, Roger Hill, Grover Hill, and David Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested to be made to Snow Hill FWB Church, 1224 Red Hill Road, Mount Olive, NC 28365 or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
