LIDA BELL LEE FUTRELL

May 25, 1918-March 5, 2012

Lida Belle Lee Futrell of Pikeville died Monday, March 5, 2012, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, where she had resided since August 2011.

She was born May 25, 1918, to the late Archie and Lula Smith Lee of Pikeville. She married Henry Carson Futrell in 1935. They were married 59 years until his death in 1996.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 7, at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church, 752 Stoney Creek Church Road, Goldsboro, with the Rev. Gary Bailey and the Rev. Barry Williamson presiding. Graveside services will follow in the cemetery at Stoney Creek Church.

The family will greet friends and relatives immediately following in the fellowship hall of the church.

Lida Belle was a longtime member of Stoney Creek Church and a devout woman, who lived a Christian life and exhibited her faith and love of God by setting high standards in her daily life. She taught by example, not by being forceful.

She was a beautiful, quiet, gentle and kind woman, who spent her life taking care of her family. She always saw the best in everyone, never judging or criticizing the behavior or decisions of others. None of her children or grandchildren ever heard her raise her voice in anger; instead she disciplined with kindness. Happiest when outside enjoying the beauty of nature, she found great joy in tending her many flowers, especially daffodils and irises, as well as taking much pride in her garden.

She had deep compassion for all animals, and fed each living creature that came to her back door.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her four children, Janice Futrell Horne of Pikeville, Linda Futrell Hinson Lucas of Goldsboro and companion, William O'Neal, Wilma Futrell Fulkerson and husband, Michael, of Scotland Neck and Carson Arnold Futrell and wife, Sadie, of Pikeville.

Grandchildren, who are deeply grieving her loss, are Kenneth Horne and wife, Sue, Kennon Horne and companion, Lynn Sasser, Lisa Horne Daniel, Sherry Hinson Atkins and husband, Dr. James Atkins, Sharon Hinson, Troy Fulkerson and wife, Judy, Carla Tino and husband, Darrin, and stepgrandson, John Logan.

Great-grandchildren include Kasey Nora Smith and husband, Matt, Nellee Horne, Lee Horne, Laurel Hinson, Lauren Fulkerson, Katy Fulkerson and Jimmy Fulkerson; stepgreat-grandchildren, Elizabeth Logan, Barbara Atkins Lingle, husband, Matt, and Jamie Atkins.

Lida Belle was eagerly anticipating the birth March 20 of her first great-great-grandchild, Brady Smith.

Also surviving are a sister Lois Lee of Cary; two sisters-in-law, Hattie Elmore Futrell and Dorothy Futrell Sullivan of Goldsboro; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; three brothers, Arnold, Herman and Elton Lee; two sisters, Bertha Lee Talton and Katie Lee Hall; and a grandson, Keith Darren Horne.

She was very devoted to her best friend, Elizabeth Grant of Goldsboro, and a niece, Bonnie Hall Neal.

Two Vietnamese sisters, Annie and Tina, who lovingly pampered her hands and feet during the past eight years, were also very dear to her.

Her daily caregivers at Kitty Askins, Dawn, Joanna, Annie, Deborah and Betsy, as well as many others at Kitty Askins, became her dear friends and family away from home during her six months at Kitty Askins. These lovely angels took care of her every want and need, always with a smile, always prompt when she needed anything, and made the last months of her life seem like living as a queen. They bathed and massaged her body, made sure she had food she could eat, walked with her daily and kept her surroundings so clean and peaceful. We are eternally grateful to all the staff at Kitty Askins.

Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions are requested to be made to Cures for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534; Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534; or Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church at 752 Stoney Creek Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
