MOUNT OLIVE -- In the early morning hours while at home, Mrs. Carol Ann Howell Herring received the best birthday gift imaginable -- she was ushered into the presence of her Lord and savior by His angels on what was to be her 72nd birthday. Anticipating and believing that a healing would come on this day, she received the ultimate healing, and has been made whole.
Mrs. Herring, a 1958 graduate of Mount Olive High School, was a retired bookkeeper, having been associated for many years with her brother in his business, Ellis R. Howell Accounting and Tax Service.
A lifelong member of Mount Olive First Pentecostal Holiness Church, she served God and His church faithfully and willingly throughout her entire life, and in all her endeavors, she was first to give God the praise and glory for all that she was able to accomplish.
In her church, she held the distinction of having 49 years of perfect attendance in Sunday School, was a member of the Women's Ministries and had recently been named for another term as secretary/treasurer.
She was church missions director, and was very instrumental in the success of the local Harvest Train for Falcon's Children's Home. Too, she served on the Girls Ministries Advisory Board.
She played an integral role in the church's monthly nursing home ministry, as well as in its prayer shawl ministry. In years past, she had been a Sunday school teacher for the teenagers, and while her outreach was known mostly on a local level, she had served for seven years on a mission team to Jamaica.
Perhaps her greatest anecdote was her God-given ability to play the piano. For a 60-year span, which began at age 12, she had served as church pianist for Mount Olive First Pentecostal Holiness Church, and in so doing, her ministry through music has enhanced countless church services and other church-related gatherings for both happy and sad occasions.
In addition, she attained a long tenure of service with Tyndall Funeral Home, as she served as staff pianist and organist. She had the unique ability to play just the right song at just the right time, never taking credit for her deeds, but always stating that it was God working through her piano-playing hands, using them to minister to hurting people's needs.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, D.C. "Bill" Herring of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Amy Blackburn Herring of Mount Olive; a daughter and son-in-law, Media` H. and Chris Lee of Mount Olive; three grandchildren, Hannah, Micah and Elijah Lee all of Mount Olive; two sisters-in-law, Faye Howell Turner and Janet Herring Howard both of Mount Olive; a brother, Steve Strickland and his wife, Cheryl, of Seven Springs; several nieces and nephews; and many dear and special friends.
There to welcome her home to heaven were her late parents, Needham and Roxie Jones Howell; her only brother, Ellis Ray Howell; and an infant grandson, Brandon Carroll Herring.
Services to celebrate the homegoing of Mrs. Carol Herring will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at Mount Olive First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with visitation immediately following. Pastors Doug Bartlett and Jeff Dail, along with the Rev. Terry Whittenton, will officiate. Committal and interment will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.
Friends and family are also being received at the residence at 207 W. Pollock St. in Mount Olive.
