EVA MAE SANDERS

Oct. 15, 1922-Dec. 11, 2011

Eva Mae was the youngest daughter of the late Hance and Dessia Williams of Lenoir County. She was born Oct. 15, 1922, in LaGrange.

Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, Mrs. Eva Mae Sanders was called "from labor to reward" while at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. Upon Eva's passing the legacy of the Williams family chapter has come to an end.

Eva Mae received Jesus Christ as Lord and savior at an early age while attending St. Matthews Free Will Baptist Church in LaGrange. She lived a life committed to the Lord.

When she moved to Goldsboro, she joined Goldsboro Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, where she continued to serve the Lord faithfully in all things. She especially enjoyed serving on the usher board and the pastor's aide ministry until her health declined.

She was educated in the Lenoir County public school system.

She served as a dedicated employee for 30 years at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro before she retired.

During that time, she met and married Walter Lonnie Sanders, to whom she was affectionately known as "E-wee." He was the love of her life, and their marriage lasted for 56 years until his death July 27 of this year.

Her favorite hobbies were taking care of her husband, cooking and gardening (she loved her flowers.)

A virtuous woman, known for her great integrity and compassion, she was much loved by everyone and a friend to all. She was a pillar of the neighborhood, and to many she was considered more of a mother than a neighbor.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter Lonnie Sanders Sr.; two sisters, Vernia Mae Wallace and Bessie Powell; and five brothers, Paul, Ide, Hance, James and Len.

She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Shelton Wooten of Goldsboro, Warren Wooten (Shirley) of Washington, D.C., and Walter Sanders Jr. (Keisha) of Goldsboro; five daughters, Thelma M. Frost of Hyattsville, Md., Alice Wooten-Johnson (Franklyn) of Goldsboro, Peggy Hines of Baltimore, Md., LaVonda Sanders (caregiver) and Lavora Coley of Goldsboro; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Goldsboro Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 1314 Ben Brewington Court, Goldsboro.

A service of remembrance will immediately follow the viewing at 2 p.m.

Following the services in the sanctuary, Mrs. Sanders' delicate temple, along with her adored family, will be escorted to Wayne Memorial Park North for interment rites.

Mrs. Sanders' earthen vessel is peacefully resting at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where the Sanders and connected families are receiving prestigious service.
