HAZEL RUTH AUSTIN PLEASANT
Jan. 15, 1946-Oct. 29, 2011
Hazel Ruth Austin Pleasant was born Jan. 15, 1946, to Bessie Austin and Willie Jacobs.
Hazel was raised in Goldsboro by her mother, Bessie Austin, Uncle Luby (Luby Toler) and Aunt Pat (Mildred Rouse Toler).
As many young people often do, Hazel thought she was missing out on what the world had to offer, so she took off for the big city of Washington, D.C., where she obtained her high school diploma and trained for a job in the nursing field.
She was an excellent caregiver, and cared for many over the years.
Hazel remained in Washington, D.C., until her early 50s. After experiencing the good, the bad and the ugly this world had to offer, she returned home to Goldsboro.
It goes without saying that throughout her life, Hazel had her share of ups and downs.
In her later years, her health began to fail.
Hazel was baptized in May 2005 at Christ Temple Apostolic Church. She described her condition as the Lord knocking her down to get her attention. While on her sickbed, Hazel was able to experience sobriety and asked the Lord for forgiveness for all that she had done. And God did what only he can do: He heard Hazel's cry and lifted the burden that she had carried throughout her entire adult life. It was with a grateful heart that Hazel lived out her final days.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Joseph) Worrells; son, Samuel Austin; grandchildren Chrissie (Courtenay) Carver, Joseph (Kristina) Worrells, Tiffany Austin, Chrishonda Austin and Cortez Austin; and great-grandchildren, Rachel Worrells, Isaiah Carver, Jayvion Colston, Joseph Braylen Worrells and Shayonna Simms.
She is further survived by nieces, Tammy Barnes, Treva Barnes and Tiara Bynum; great-niece Nybria Lewis; nephew D'Marco Lewis; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred "Patsy" Barnes, and guardians, Luby Toler and Mildred "Pat" Toler.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at 5 p.m. at New Spirit Ministries Church at 1501 N. William St., Goldsboro.
Ms. Pleasant's earthen vessel is peacefully resting at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where the Pleasant and connected families are receiving prestigious service.
