RUTH MATTHEWS KORNEGAY

Ruth Matthews Kornegay, 89, passed away Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at her home.

Ruth was born in Wilson County Nov. 17, 1921, to the late John Thomas Matthews and Bertie Scott Matthews.

She went to school for early education at Charles L. Coon, and graduated from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson.

Ruth taught and lived in the teacherage at Micro.

She then moved to Pikeville School to teach English and French.

While there, she met Marion B. Kirby; they were married and blessed with a son and daughter, Jerry Thomas Kirby and Connie Ruth Kirby-Hare.

She and her husband built and operated the Wayne Motel and Restaurant in Goldsboro from 1953 until 1999.

Her husband passed in 1965, and she remarried to Jack Morris Kornegay in 1968.

Ruth was also a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with pastor Kelvin Gurley officiating. Interment will be Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery.

Ruth is survived by her son, Jerry Thomas Kirby; her granddaughter, Grace Marie Brustead; her daughter, Connie Ruth Kirby-Hare and husband, Jimmy; her grandson, Donald L. Jenkins Jr. and wife, Jennifer, all of Goldsboro; her stepson, J. Morris Kornegay Jr. of Goldsboro; her sister-in-law, Margaret Matthews of Goldsboro; nephews, Allan and Kent Matthews; her four stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; her special niece, Jane Hendrix; her faithful friend, Dorothy Bell; loyal companion, Skeeter; and special caregiver, Lindsey Hare.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Marion Kirby and Jack Kornegay; her brothers, James Matthews and Clifton Matthews and wife, Adean; and her nephews, Thomas and Randy Matthews.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Free Will Baptist Children's Home Inc. at P.O. Box 249, Middlesex, N.C., 27577.

The family will receive friends following the service at Seymour Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of the son, Jerry Thomas Kirby at 202 Westwood Drive, Goldsboro.
