DUDLEY -- William Berry Thompson, 90, Sleepy Creek, Dudley, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday night, Sept. 21, after a short illness.
Bill was a native of Goldsboro.
He graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1938 and North Carolina State University in 1942.
He had a long career as a chemical engineer with Goodyear and Union Carbide in Ohio and Tennessee, and was involved in several plant startups and the development of new processes for the production of synthetic rubber and the production of highly enriched uranium.
He was the son of the late William B. Thompson Sr. and Gertrude Merrimon Thompson of Goldsboro.
He is survived by his wife of eight years, Edith Bruton Thompson of Sleepy Creek; his brother, Charles Aycock Thompson of Virginia; his daughters, Sandra Jo Thompson and Sally Jean Beidelman and husband, Larry, of Ohio; son, Edward Henry Thompson of Nevada; grandson, Jason Lee Beidelman and wife, Julie, of Illinois; grandson, James E. Thompson of Florida; great-grandchildren, Kayla and Ashley Gueverra of Florida; stepdaughter, Catherine Ward Wahnefried of Wilmington; stepgrandson, Matthew Bruton Wahnefried and wife, Stevie, of Leland; and stepgranddaughter, Rachel Edith Wahnefried of Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Roberta Nahm Thompson, and his son, James Allen Thompson.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Goldsboro, his home church, Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. James Harry officiating.
Visitation will follow the service in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends make memorial donations to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or your local hospice organization.
