PIKEVILLE -- Franklin Delano Newell, 76, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family.

Franklin was born in Mallory County, West Virginia, on May 31, 1934, to the late James Leonard Newell and Elizabeth Gibson Newell. He retired from the United States Navy after serving his country proudly for 20 years. Franklin worked as a chief boiler technician in the United States Navy and served on destroyers for 14 years. He later worked as a recruiter and a career counselor for four years. After his military career, Franklin went back to school and received his business management degree. He then began working in automobile sales, then as a financial manager, and later retired as general manager for a Chevrolet dealership in Massachusetts. Franklin was an active member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church where he was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Middleborough, Mass. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery.

Franklin is survived by his wife, Marguerite Boutin Newell; his daughter, Elizabeth Crogan and husband Dann of San Diego, Calif.; his sons, Edmond Franklin Newell and wife Sherry of Escondido, Calif., Franklin Delano Newell Jr. and wife Diane of Newman, Calif., and James Arthur Newell of Virginia Beach, Va.; his sister, Marcella Spurgeon of Marion, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 1000 N. Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro, NC 27530 or to Southeastern Cancer Care at 203 Cox Boulevard, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
