SANFORD, Fla. -- Eddie "Ed" Harold Hayden, 73, died Saturday at his residence in Sanford, Fla., after a long, valiant battle with prostate cancer.
There will be a memorial service at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Goldsboro, N.C., Sunday at 5 p.m., with pastor Bill Ordelt officiating.
Ed was born June 2, 1937, in Muncie, Ind., to Marie Sallee Hayden of Muncie, Ind., and Harold Sumter Crain of Mitchellsburg, Ky.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Julie Smith Hayden; two sons, Timothy Harold Hayden of Sanford, Fla., and Alex Daniel Hayden of Goldsboro, N.C.; his beloved beagle, Maggie; his sister, Flora Ann Crain of Perrysville, Ky.; and brother, Marvin Crain of Danville, Ky.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, Harold Sumter Crain; a brother, Gene Hayden; and his maternal grandparents, Omar and Lena Sallee.
Ed was a graduate of Royerton High School in Muncie, Ind., and he attended Ball State University, where he studied music.
He was a charter member of and played lead alto sax with the Starlight Dance Band in Goldsboro for more than 18 years, and many other bands throughout his life.
He retired from the Goldsboro News-Argus as a news photographer in 2000.
In 2000, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he organized the Man-to-Man support group in Wayne County, N.C.
Ed was a longtime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Goldsboro, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the church an hour before the service and immediately following the service.
