GEORGE WAYLAND BRYAN

George Wayland Bryan passed away peacefully Thursday Feb. 17, 2011.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 20, 2011, at Wayne Memorial Park.

He was born on Sept. 13, 1927, in Goldsboro, the son of the late George Needam Bryan and Gertrude Brown Bryan.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, John Michael Bryan, and by a brother, Carl Bryan.

George served in the US Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1946. He again served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955.

He had a vast career beginning at CP&L in Goldsboro. He was a salesman for Nationwide Insurance. He also worked for the U.S. Treasury Department as an IRS agent. He left the government briefly to start his own business, Azalea Renovation, but returned to the U.S. Treasury Department where he stayed until he retired in 1988.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Jana Bell Worrell Bryan of Wilmington; a sister, Mary Middlewood of Virginia; children, Sharon Bryan Lammons and husband, John, of Raleigh, Linda Bryan Padgett and husband, Keith, of Wilmington, and Donald E. Bryan and wife, Betsy, of Raleigh; grandchildren, Anthony D. Lammons and wife, Loredana; Dorothy Bryan Cole and husband, Jon, and Elizabeth M. Bryan, all of Raleigh; and great-grandchildren, Lucas Lammons and Nicholas Lammons, both of Raleigh.

George enjoyed his family, he was an avid reader, he played guitar by ear and even played in several bands in Wilmington in his earlier days. He also enjoyed woodworking and along with his wife, keeping a beautiful yard.

George made many friends along the way and loved telling a joke to get people to laugh.

The family received friends Saturday from 2 until 3 p.m. at the Silver Stream Health and Rehabilitation Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.

The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Peter Wiegman for his patience, care and concern for our parents and family through these last years and to those special people at Silver Stream Health and Rehabilitation for their care of our parents.
