Robert E. Fields, 82, died on Jan. 25, 2011, at SECU Hospice House of Johnston Health, Smithfield, after a period of declining health. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Minshew-Coley Funeral Home, Kenly, N.C., with Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in the Kenly Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert was born in Wayne County to the late Chesbro F. Fields and Lena Jackson Fields and attended schools in Nahunta and Pikeville. He lived and worked in Wayne County until moving to Johnston County in 1960. He was an active member of Kenly United Methodist Church for 50 years, serving in a variety of roles including Sunday school superintendent and chairman of the board of trustees.

He served as a member of the board of directors of Kenly Savings Bank for 25 years and was involved in numerous community and civic activities.

He owned and operated Fields Motors Inc. (now Kenly Ford) for many years before returning to East Carolina University and beginning a late-life career as a self-employed real estate appraiser. Robert was an avid golfer and a participant in the Senior Amateur Division of the PGA.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nan M. Fields, his daughter Becky Fields of Cape Carteret; his son Mike Fields and wife Patricia of Hampstead; his granddaughter Staci Pierce, husband Branson, and great-grandchildren Trey and Taylor of Wilmington; and one sister, Marie Fields Dail of Wilson.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, his stepmother Ethel B. Fields, his beloved stepgrandmother Piercy Barnette, and two brothers John C. Fields and Curtis G. Fields.
