STRAUSS DAVID "S.D" DAVIS JR.

CALYPSO -- Staruss David Davis Jr., "S.D." of Calypso, passed away at Wayne Memorial Hospital early Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011.

Funeral services for S.D. will be held on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at 7 p.m., at the Calypso Presbyterian Church in Calypso, with the Rev. Cynthia Williams officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the church.

He was the son of the late Strauss David Sr., and Vivian Lambert Davis. S.D. is survived by his wife of 56 years, Harriet Andrews "Johnnie" Davis; a sister-in-law, Sallie Belle Davis of Dobbersville, Edna Davis of Calypso, Lillie Davis of Fremont; his brothers-in-law; Roland Smith of Greenville, Andy Andrews and wife, Nola, of Goldsboro. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews who have considered him a "very special" uncle through the years. He was preceded in death by his sisters; Dorothy Davis Sloan, Inez Davis Best, Estelle Davis Smith; his brothers, William Penn Davis, Arthur Lambert Davis, Arnold David Davis, Ray Marvin Davis, and Jack Donald Davis.

S.D. graduated from Calypso High School. He was employed by Junie Strickland General Store of Calypso for seven years and then at Leder's of Goldsboro for 38 years. He loved working with the public and was well known for his knowledge of mens' and boys' clothing. S.D. retired from Leder's in 1996. He then enjoyed some part-time employment with Best and Sauls Mens Shop of Goldsboro. Throughout his many years in the Calypso community, he was president of the Calypso Ruritan Club, member of the Mount Olive Masonic Lodge No. 208, and Woodman of the World. He was a committee man of Troop 42, Boy Scouts of America. S.D. was a lifetime member of the Calypso Presbyterian Church, serving as past Deacon and Elder of the church, superintendent of the Sunday school, teacher of the senior class, church treasurer, member of the choir, and men of the church. S.D. was well known for his gardening expertise. His yard was always a showplace--a result of many hours of labor--a labor of love--by S.D. and his wife, Johnnie. His family and his community will miss him immensely.

Burial will take place Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the Calypso Cemetery
