BERTHA MAE WOOTEN

Feb. 18, 1925-Nov. 26. 2010

Bertha Mae Wooten, 610 S. Slocumb St., was born Feb. 18, 1925 in Goldsboro, N.C., to the late Luby and Jane Black. She was called by the Heavenly Father to her final resting place Nov. 26, 2010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Bertha worked for Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and the State of North Carolina in her early years.

Later, she worked at Wilbur's and McCall's until she retired.

Bertha was a member of St. Luke, where she was a member of the mother board and home mission. She also served on the usher board until her health failed.

She leaves to cherish precious memories a son, Vonnell (Evelyn) Lewis Sr. of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Angela Bradley of Temple Hills, Md., Vickye (Rickey) Richardson of Goldsboro, N.C., Vanessa Armstrong of Goldsboro, N.C., Vonnell Lewis Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Brian Armstrong of Goldsboro, N.C.; four sisters-in-law, Linda Hinton of Rockhill, S.C., Brenda Sutton of LaGrange, N.C., Margaret Weldon of Kinston, N.C., and Wilhelmenia Whitfield of Newport News, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Spencer Wooten and Samuel Wooten both of Charlotte, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren; a special friend, Thelma Best; a devoted caregiver, Lucy DeVaugh; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A service of remembrance will be held Friday at 12 noon at St. Luke Church of Christ in Mount Olive.

Following the services in the sanctuary, Ms. Wooten's earthen vessel, along with her adored family, will be escorted to Wayne Memorial Park for interment rites. It is in this physical consign that Ms. Wooten must remain until the role book is open and the master is giving all the saints their final report. Then they will hear Him say "well done thy good and faithful servant."

Services of compassion and distinguished class are rendered by E.M. Matthews Funeral Home and Cremations Inc.
