KENANSVILLE -- Joyce Whittle Bell, 73, passed away at Duplin General Hospital on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010.

Visitation will be held at the Kenansville Baptist Church today, Nov. 28, 2010, at 2 p.m., with the funeral service at 3. Interment will follow the funeral at Devotional Gardens located on Highway 24 between Kenansville and Warsaw.

Joyce grew up in Warsaw and graduated from Warsaw High School, where she was a cheerleader, in 1955. She attended East Carolina College (now University), where she also was cheerleader. Joyce majored in elementary education, and graduated in three years, in 1958.

Joyce taught first grade at both Kenansville Elementary School and Warsaw Elementary School, but spent most of her career teaching second grade at Warsaw Elementary School. During her career of 34 years, Joyce touched many lives. She had a special gift for teaching. Joyce devoted extra time and attention to her students, helping them to master the difficulties of learning to read. She took great pleasure in their successes in their lives and careers. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher's sorority.

Joyce's life exemplified her deep Christian faith. She never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Joyce was a dedicated member of Kenansville Baptist Church. As a young bride and new member, she played the piano. Later, she taught both adult and children's Sunday school for many years.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Leland Smith Whittle, a native of Greensboro, and her mother, Elizabeth Miller Whittle, a native of Warsaw. In later years, they resided in Goldsboro.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 50 years, Kenneth Ray Bell; son, Kenneth Patrick Bell and wife, Mary Grice Bell; grandchildren, Kenneth Grice Bell and Ann Holland Bell, all of Kenansville; sister, Sue Whittle Davis and husband, Frank Davis, of Raleigh; sisters- and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
