GOLDSBORO, N.C. -- Robert "Bob" Bruns, 71, 205 Leigh Place, passed away Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Bob was born April 13, 1939, to the late Fred and Thelma Bruns.

He graduated from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.

He worked for many years in Toledo at Toledo Scale, Prestole Everlock and AP Parts.

Mr. Bruns relocated to Goldsboro, N.C., with AP Parts in 1974, and worked with them until his retirement in 1999. Bob also was an insurance agent with Aflac until he retired in 2009.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he served for three terms on the church council, and served as the superintendent of Sunday school.

Bob was also a member of Walnut Creek Country Club, where he served three terms on the board of directors. He was a member of the Goldsboro Elks Lodge 139, where he headed the membership investigation committee. He was a member of the Military Affairs Committee at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and served on the Lenoir Community College board of directors.

A memorial service to honor Bob's life will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bill Ordelt officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

In addition to his wife, Sandra L. Bruns, Bob is survived by his daughters, Robin B. Best and husband, Jerry, of Mount Olive and Wendy B. Upchurch of Goldsboro. Mr. Bruns is also survived by his four grandchildren, Bailey Upchurch, Corey Upchurch, Chris Best and Kyle Best.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 532 Country Day Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center at 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The Bruns family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the seventh-floor nurses at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Kitty Askins staff and Dr. Chang and the staff of Southeastern Medical Oncology Center for the love and care shown to Bob.
