DUDLEY -- The Rev. J.C. Whaley, 77, 242 Beaver Drive in Dudley, went to be with his Lord Tuesday morning at his residence.

Born in Lenoir County, he was the son of the late Iva J. and Margaret Edwards Whaley.

He was an ordained minister for more than 40 years, and a veteran of the United States Army.

A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with the Rev. Shirley Hall officiating.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Faulk Whaley; four children, Johnnie and Angie Whaley of Wilmington, N.C., Sue and Kenneth Strickland of Pikeville, Tony and Esther Whaley of Fremont and Ronnie and Wanda Whaley of Goldsboro; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters; and special friends, Ray and Brenda Russell.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.
