Graveside services for retired Air Force Master Sgt. Daniel Powell will be held Thursday, July 15, 2010, at 11 a.m. with full military honors at Wayne Memorial Park. The Rev. David Jackson will be officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 14, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 157 Hinnant Road, Pikeville, N.C.

Dan was born Jan. 16, 1938, in Ravenswood, W.Va., the son of the late Frank and Alice Powell.

He graduated from Ravenswood High School, where he was active in many school functions including National Honor Society and National Thespian (drama) Society, and was a member of the Senior High School Band for six years. He was selected to the West Virginia All-State Band in both his junior and senior years.

In addition to his many school functions, he was very actively involved in Boy Scouting. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, was awarded the God and Country Award and was tapped into the honorary scouting fraternity, The Order of the Arrow. He served as a Cub Scout Leader, Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and Junior Assistant Scout Master.

Following high school, he attended Ohio University for one year before entering the United States Air Force, where he served with honor and distinction for 21 years.

During this career, Dan received many personal and unit awards for his distinguished service. Among his personal favorites was having been hand-picked by the Strategic Air Command to participate in the research, development and flight testing of the top-secret SR-71 spy plane at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, he returned to complete his associate degree in business from Wayne Community College, where he graduated with honors and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.

He joined the staff of the Goldsboro Wal-Mart in 1988 and remained with the company for 13 years, including six years as an assistant store manager.

Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Connie of the home; a son, David Powell of Rosewood; a daughter, Carole Smith of Rosewood; a stepdaughter, Pam Robinson and husband, Greg, of Pikeville; a stepson, Roland Cote; a very special granddaughter-angel, Elizabeth Hope Robinson of Pikeville; and three grandchildren, Sierra Holcomb, Michael Lawrence and Amanda Lawrence.
