NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Rita McGarrity Cox died Wednesday at Vanderbilt Medical Center surrounded by family.

Graveside services will be held at Cox/Thompson Cemetery in Goldsboro Saturday at 2 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Granny White Church of Christ, 3805 Granny White Pike in Nashville, Tenn., Thursday at 2 p.m.

Rita was the wife of Marshall Edwin Cox Jr. and daughter of Edna McGarrity Lummis and the late James E. McGarrity.

She was the oldest of three siblings, Sherrie McGarrity Saller and her late brother, James E. McGarrity Jr., who died fighting in Vietnam.

Rita graduated from Freed Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn.

She worked for Vanguard Health Systems and with other health systems in Nashville for almost two decades. During her time at Vanguard, she worked diligently completing numerous commercial real estate projects throughout the country, receiving recognition for her design.

Rita held accredited licenses in real estate and interior design.

She was an active outdoorswoman in gardening, hunting and water sports.

She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Marguerite Cox of Goldsboro; brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Kathy Cox of Chapel Hill; nephews and niece, Adam, Carson and Audrey Saller of Nashville, Tenn.; and nephews, Adam and Jason Cox of Chapel Hill.
