Donald Lee "Duck" Atkinson, the fourth child of Geraldine Cox Atkinson and the late Willie Lee "Buck" Atkinson, was born May 20, 1958, in Wayne County. He departed this life Jan. 21, 2010, in Boston.
He attended Goldsboro City Schools and graduated from Goldsboro High School with the Class of 1977. A few years later, he decided to move to Boston, where he worked at the Shriners Hospital and at a local retail clothing store.
"Duck" as he was affectionately known, loved his family, friends, and hometown. He especially enjoyed his yearly visit to Goldsboro for the alumni during the Memorial Day weekend. Words can not express how much he loved to come home during this period of time to meet & greet family, friends, and classmates.
He was preceded in death by his father and his brother James (Swindell) Atkinson.
Donald leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Geraldine Atkinson of Goldsboro; two sisters, Evelyn A. Starkie and Debora A. Sinclair of Goldsboro; two brothers, William "Pro" Atkinson of Goldsboro, and Byron (Evangeline) Atkinson of Raleigh; six aunts, Essie Cox, Eva Mae Cox, Mary (Herman) Edwards, Sarah (David) Frazier, Alice Atkinson all of Goldsboro, and Dorothy "Dot" Atkinson of Maryland; one uncle, Raymond (Geraldine) Atkinson of Goldsboro; one great aunt, Daisy Coley of Goldsboro; five nieces, seven nephews, two great nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family would like to recognize some special friends: Larry Hilliard, Reginald McLaurin, Albert Oates, Hobie Simms, Wilbert Reed, and Charles Brown all of Goldsboro, Marshall Glover, Sherrod Brimage and Shirley "Mama Dukes" Bivins both of Boston.
A visitation for Mr. Atkinson will be held on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home. There, the soothing and serene atmosphere will allow family and friends to comfort one another and spend precious lasting moments with Donald prior to the obsequies.
The Celebration of Life services for Mr. Atkinson will be held Friday at noon at New Spirit Church Ministries 1501 North William Street Goldsboro, N.C. 27530 with the Moderator Dr. Michael Johnson providing words of inspiration. After which, the E.M. Matthews Classic Angelic White fleet will escort Mr. Atkinson and his precious family to Old Mill Cemetery on Central Heights Rd. Goldsboro. Following the services by the grave side, the servants of service will inter Mr. Atkinson's earthly temple with dignity and class. It is in this consign that Donald will remain until the great coronation, in the middle of the air.
