MORGANTON -- Mary Lowrie Norwood Barnett, 83, Grace Ridge, formerly of Goldsboro, died Friday at Valdese General Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton, with the Rev. Bruce Walker officiating.

Born in Wayne County Jan. 30, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Hart Norwood and Margaret Shannon Norwood.

Mary Lowrie was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where she had been a lay reader, member of the church choir and a bell-ringer and was working on her certificate toward Education for Ministries.

She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a master's degree in library science and was the director of the Burke County Public Library for 30 years.

She loved to travel, garden, read aloud and communicate through e-mail.

Mary Lowrie is survived by her husband, Douglas Allen Barnett; sons, Douglas Allen Barnett Jr. and his wife, Janet, of Pattersonville, N.Y., and Thomas Hart Norwood Barnett and his wife, Bonnie, of Morganton; grandchildren, Johnathan DeRosa Barnett, Zachary Ryan Barnett and Charles Nicholas Barnett; and a sister, Ruth Hart Norwood Kemp and her husband, Philip, of Goldsboro.

In addition to her parents, Mary Lowrie was preceded in death by a brother, Neil Shannon Norwood.

The family will receive friends in the church parish hall following the service.
