Edith Powell, formerly of New Bern, died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St. in Goldsboro, with pastor Scottie Rodgers officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park, U.S. 117 south in Dudley.

Edith was born May 29, 1954, in Goldsboro to the late David Spruill and Lela Mae Hamm Spruill.

Edith attended Central High School and Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro. Soon after leaving high school in 1972, she moved to New Bern to live. There she began a career in the health care profession, were she worked for more than 20 years.

Edith caught a ride with friends to Philadelphia, Pa., in 1974 and lived there for three years.

She then moved back to New Bern, met and married her first husband, the Rev. George Meadows in 1978. Edith became a widower at an early age.

In 1995, James Powell refused to let Edith get away from him again. They were married for seven wonderful years.

Edith was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in New Bern prior to returning to Goldsboro in May 2007.

Edith liked shopping, traveling and going to yard sales.

She leaves to cherish her memories two sisters, Carrie S. Faison of Goldsboro and Judith S. (James) Baker of Pikeville; one brother, Michael Spruill of Goldsboro; one niece, Shauna M. Baker of Dallas, Texas; four nephews, Shannon Pierre (Denise) Baker and Marcus Baker of Pikeville, Vander Valechi Spruill of Baltimore, Md., and T-Lee Williams of Goldsboro; two great-nieces, Maurriel Baker and Shannon Baker of Winston-Salem; four great-nephews, Shamar Baker, Devajhea Applewhite, Jaalin Applewhite and Jahiem Williams; one aunt, Virginia Coley of Goldsboro; and two great-aunts, Lillian Brown of Pikeville and Vernell Brown of Goldsboro.

Siblings Carlton F. Spruill, Joseph B. Spruill and Wilbert M. Hamm preceeded her in death and also a nephew, Petrosky C. Faison.

A public viewing will be held Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St. in Goldsboro, with the family receiving friends there from 6 to 7 p.m., and at all other times at the residence of James and Judith Baker, 554 Artis Road in Pikeville.
