JOHN MARVIN WORRELL

WASHINGTON, N.C. -- John Marvin Worrell, 95, former resident of 1777 John Small Ave., Washington, N.C., passed away Thursday at Williamston House, Williamston.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 19, 2009, at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Brooks Patti and Greg Barmer officiating. Burial will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Hwy. 264 E.

Mr. Worrell was born Nov. 20, 1913, in Gates County to Robert Horace and Erma Matthews Worrell who preceded him in death. On June 2, 1939, J.M. married Jessie Wrae Eason, who survives. Mr. Worrell retired in 1978 after 22 years as an agriculture instructor at Washington High School. He was a member of First Baptist Church Washington, Baracca Timberlake Sunday School Class and served as a deacon. J.M. was also a Charter Member of Beaufort County Grange No. 1233, a former member of Old Ford and Washington Ruritan Club and the Swan Quarter Lions Club. He taught agriculture in Hyde County for 20 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Amelia Riffle and husband, Joe, of Washington and Betsy Lee Clark and husband, Hugh, of Goldsboro; one son, Marvin Ray Worrell and wife, Martha, of Manteo; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
