RALEIGH -- Elsie C. Mercer, 89, passed away Friday at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont. Visitation will be today from 4 until 6 p.m. at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont.
Mrs. Mercer was born on Dec. 5, 1919, in Wayne County to the late Eli and Emily Pipkin Carter. She was a veteran of the United States Navy and retired from the State of N.C. Department of Labor after 31 years.
She is survived by a sister, Rosa C. West of Pikeville; and a nephew, Stan West and wife, Debra, of Fremont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Mercer Sr.
