Died June 8, 2009

Ann Tolston died Monday at the beach home she loved.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Howard-Carter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery.

She was a graduate of the Lenoir Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and had been employed at Lenoir Memorial Hospital since 1980. Ann received her BSN and MSN from East Carolina University and was a member of Sigma Theta Tau.

Her early years were spent as a CCRN in the coronary care unit, where she touched the lives of all her patients.

For the past 11 years, Ann led the professional development of many staff members in her role as education specialist. She was recognized for excellence in practice and commitment to the profession of nursing by being named one of the Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina in 2004. She set the standard for excellence in her commitment to education and the high quality of care she extended and expected from others. Her generosity was unmarveled, her smile was infectious and she will be greatly missed by those who loved her.

Ann is survived by her husband, Mark Tolston; her brother, Frog Carter and his wife Mary of LaGrange; her sisters, Sally Kelly, Evelyn Phelps and Doris Jones all of Goldsboro; numerous nieces and nephews; her father-in-law, Richard L. Tolston; and her brothers-in-law, Ricky Tolston, Gary Tolston and his wife Betty, all of Kinston and Mike Tolston and his wife, Holly, and their two sons, Tanner and Gunner, of Swansboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Helen Jones; brothers, James Carter, Buck Carter and Walter Carter Jr.; and her mother-in-law, Mildred "Lucky" Tolston.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Howard-Carter Funeral Home.
