MOUNT OLIVE -- Beverly Ray "Bootly" Whitfield Sr., 81, died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital with his family surrounding him.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Tyndall Funeral Home Chapel, followed by interment in Wayne Memorial Park, with the Rev. Sherman Dilley and the Rev. Frank Harrison officiating.

He was married to Inez Lewis Whitfield for more than 59 years.

He was a retired farmer and carpenter in the Indian Springs community and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a charter member of Indian Springs Volunteer Fire Department where he had served as lieutenant and chaplain.

He was a longtime member of Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church where he had been a deacon, a member of the board of trustees and sang in the choir, as well as being Sunday school treasurer for 421/2 years.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Whitfield is survived by three sons, Beverly R. "Boots" Whitfield Jr. and his wife, Jenny, of Goldsboro; the Rev. Michael Lewis "Mickey" Whitfield and his wife, Donna, and H. Jeffrey "Jeff" Whitfield and his wife, Lisa, all of Mount Olive; seven grandchildren, Beverly M. Williams and her husband, Bobby, the Rev. Joshua Whitfield and his wife, Allison, Taylor Whitfield and his wife, Brandy, Khrystal Whitfield and Zachary Whitfield, all of Mount Olive; Susan W. Smith and her husband, MIchael, of Charlotte and Matthew Whitfield and his wife, Reagan, of Raleigh; five great-grandchildren, Samantha Williams, Austin Williams, Ben Smith, Charlie Smith and Jack Whitfield; and one great-great-grandchild, Gracie Braswell.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brunetta Outlaw Dowling; his parents, Henry and Rose Whitfield; a brother, Harold Whitfield; and a sister, Margy W. Trueblood.

The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. and at other times at the residence at 1841 Indian Springs Road, Mount Olive.
