ELTON S. HINNANT
July 5, 1921-April 8, 2009
PIKEVILLE -- Elton S. Hinnant, 87, 929 Hinnant Road, passed away quietly at Kitty Askins Hospice Center on Wednesday.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with Masonic Rites in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Mitchell and Past Master Rick Pridgen officiating.
There will be a time of visiting and sharing with the family following the service.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Patricia Smith Hinnant; a stepson, Norwood Ligon (Lynn) of Pikeville and their two sons, Stephen and Joseph Ligon; a stepdaughter, Belle Manace of Goldsboro and her daughter, Olivia; a brother-in-law, Tommy Craft of Farmville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He made his career as a dedicated employee of Sears with 40 years of service. After his retirement Mr. Hinnant was elected and served as mayor of Pikeville from 1987 to 1995. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Harmony Lodge 340 for 63 years and served as Past Master and for 22 years he was secretary.
He was in the Pikeville graduating class of 1939. Mr. Hinnant was a member of St. Joseph's United Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army from 1942 to 1945.
"Mr. Elton" will be remembered for his love of baseball and was an avid supporter of the Wayne County Post 11 American Legion baseball organization. He was well-known for his prosperous garden that he cultivated so diligently each summer, growing those wonderful tomatoes and collards.
The love and support of his grandsons, Stephen and Joseph, and all of his family will forever be cherished.
Mr. Hinnant was the son of the late Martha Vail Hinnant and the late Claude S. Hinnant.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lester Hinnant, Curtis Hinnant, Erma H. Carlton and Noralee H. Craft.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Post 11 American Legion baseball team, c/o Wayne County American Legion Baseball Booster Club, 176 Cricket Ridge Road, Mount Olive, N.C. 28365, or to the Fremont STARS Theatrical Arts Program, c/o Sheila Wolfe, principal, 101 Pine St., Fremont, N.C. 27863.
