FREMONT -- Ruth Hayes Lee Dunn, 86, died Monday at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home. The Rev. Eugene Ridley from Long Leaf Baptist Church in Wilmington will officiate. Graveside service will be Saturday at noon at Elmwood Cemetery.

Ms. Dunn was born in Wayne County to the late Vaden Vestus Lee and Ida Mae Radford. She graduated from Nahunta High School and continued her studies at the Dorthea Dix School of Nursing in Raleigh where she graduated in 1947 as a registered nurse.

She married Arthur I. Dunn at the Broad Street Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va. She practiced nursing throughout her life for about 40 years in both New Jersey from 1946 until 1972 and then in North Carolina until she retired in 1984. For the last two decades, Ms. Dunn enjoyed her senior years volunteering at New Hanover Medical Center making puppets for the children's ward, stocking caps for the newborns and working as a hostess/receptionist at the front desk. She also spent many hours performing volunteer work at the local senior center. Ms. Dunn actively attended Long Leaf Baptist Church.

She is survived by six children, four sons, Robert Lee, William Arthur, Richard Edward and James Craig Dunn; two daughters, Patricia Ruth Dunn Holmes and Barbara Lynn Dunn Riddle; six grandchildren, Theresa, Richard, Elizabeth, Joey, Stacy and Kyle; four great-grandchildren, Grace, Matthew, Jamie and Ashley; two brothers, Billie V. and Ralph J. Lee; and one sister, Dorothy Lee Johnson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur I. Dunn; five brothers, Braxton, Gurnie, Claudie, Waverly and Ivey Lee; and two sisters, Louise Lee Thompson and Ruby Lee Rose.

The family will receive friends Friday following the service at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, 102 N. Pine St., and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Ray Holmes, 3288 North U.S. 117 in Belfast.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Long Leaf Baptist Church, 317 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington, N.C. 28412 or to Hospice Care Center, 725-A Wellington Ave., Wilmington, N.C. 28412, in memory of Ruth Dunn.
