CHARLES SHACKELFORD

Major Charles Anderson Shackelford, 80, of 1940 Antioch Road, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Shackelford was born in Guilford County to the late Coley Byrd Shackelford and Della Watson Shackelford. He was married to the late La Dell Edmundson Shackelford, who preceded him in death on Aug. 30 after 55 years of marriage. Mr. Shackelford enjoyed technical and literature writing, with a passion for fine automobiles and a great love for reading, watching old movies and working crossword puzzles. Mr. Shackelford served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from the U. S. Air Force.

Some of his most cherished years were at East Carolina University, where he met his beloved La Dell. During this time he served as president of the Young Democratic Club.

Editor of the East Carolina's Yearbook, the Tecoan Mr. Shackleford was a member of the Veterans Club and Phi Sigma Pi. Mr. Shackelford also served as a Student Legislator on the Executive Council and was honored as a distinguished Military Graduate and one of the "Who's Who" among students in American universities and colleges.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jefferson Daughtry officiating. Burial will follow in the Edmundson Family Cemetery with full military honors.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine Shackelford-Giddens and David Giddens, of Greensboro; a son, Charles A. Shackelford Jr., of Charlotte; a son and daughter-in-law, Bradford E. Shackelford and Jo Simpson Shackelford, of Wilson; four grandchildren, Anderson and Cameron Shackelford of Wilson and Ian and Nuria Lorena Shackelford, of Charlotte; two stepgrandchildren, Lalenja Harrington, of Greensboro and Rhiannon Giddens, of Durham; a great-grandson, Justin Harrington, of Greensboro; and his sisters, Ruby S. Tuttle, of Archdale and Doris S. Carter, of High Point.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clayton W. Shackelford, James P. Shackelford, J. Clifton Shackelford, William H. Shackelford, Coley Byrd Shackelford Jr.; and a sister, Stacy S. Robbins.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

The family will receive friends Monday from 10 until 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.
