William Cornelius "Bill" Wachter Jr., 97, died Wednesday in Hagerstown, Md.

He is survived by two sons, David A. Wachter and his wife Roberta of Goldsboro and Dennis Wachter and his wife Madelyn of Connecticut, and eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four stepchildren, and his second wife of 18 years, Nan Mackey Wachter

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Margaret Heard Wachter, by son Robert Wachter, and by grandson, Tim Wachter.

Mr. Wachter was the son of the Rev. William C. Wachter and Ella Ida Aumen Wachter. He graduated from Shepherd College. He was a member of Mt. Nebo EUB Church in Boonsboro , Christ Lutheran Church in Hilton Head, and Zion Reformed United Church of Christ in Hagerstown. He taught Sunday School for years and was treasurer of Zion Reformed UCC.

He lettered in baseball, soccer, football, and track. He was a member of the Shepherd College Alumni Association, the Rams Club, and the Emeritus Club, the Maryland Terrapin Club, and Dickinson College Royal Order of the Mermaid.

After serving briefly in the Langley Flying Cadets of the US Army Air Corps, Mr. Wachter taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Washington County, Md. He then opened the first truck terminal in Hagerstown, began the Wachter Transport Company, worked for Fairchild Aircraft, and was instrumental in the formation of Little League Baseball, Pony League Baseball, and Colt League Baseball in Hagerstown, Md. He managed teams in each of these divisions and took each to the World Series Championships. He also served as president of the Hagerstown Pony League and the Hagerstown Colt League.

Mr. Wachter founded Duvinage Corporation of Hagerstown, manufacturer of architectural stairways. He served on the Small Business Administration's Community Advisory Council of Baltimore. He was an active Rotarian, a past president of the Rotary Club of Hagerstown, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, and a sustaining member of the Rotary Foundation. He was a president Fountain Head Country Club; a member of the Shipyard Golf Club at Hilton Head., S.C.; a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Hagerstown, Md.; and member of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, Md.
