CHRISTINE C. SUTTON

LAGRANGE -- Christine Carter Sutton, 76, died Monday at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Rouse Funeral Home, with the Rev. Adam Brinkley officiating. A committal service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Mrs. Sutton was born in Sampson County to the late Romie Lee Carter and Myrtle Lee Sessoms Carter.

Mrs. Sutton graduated as valedictorian of her senior class from Franklin High School in Kerr, N.C., in 1948. She attended Mount Olive College and graduated from East Carolina University in 1959 with a bachelor's degree, and in 1963 with a master's degree. A career educator, she taught for 33 years in the Wayne and Lenoir County Public School systems, retiring in 1992. She and her husband maintained farming operations in Lenoir and Duplin counties and also maintained rental and investment properties in Emerald Isle in Carteret County. Mrs. Sutton was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and Woodmen of the World. She was an avid reader and had a special interest in quilting, sewing, needle arts and ceramics.

Mrs. Sutton is survived by her husband of 58 years, Marcellus Lanier Sutton; two daughters, Carol Dianne Sutton Nisbet and Donna Kaye Sutton of Winterville; three grandchildren, Stephen Howard Nisbet and Charles Marcellus Nisbet of Austin, Texas, and Kelly Marie Kincaid of Winterville; one sister, Virginia Belle Carter Tevepaugh of Creedmoor; two brothers, Joseph Franklin Carter of Lexington, S.C., and Clifton Maxton Carter of Clinton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Amos Lee Carter, and a sister, Mary Magdaline Carter Mason.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service on Thursday evening, and other times at the residence.
