Robert Kirk Gardner, 57, died Sunday evening at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Mr. Gardner was born on May 6, 1949 to Barbara Kirk Gardner of Goldsboro and the late George Charles Gardner. He was a graduate of New Hope High School and also graduated from the University of North Carolina State in Raleigh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks Administration. Mr. Gardner was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. He was a Natural Science Museum Curator for the North Carolina Botanical Gardens for 27 years. Mr. Gardner will be remembered as an educator, writer, and horticulturist.

Private graveside services will be held Wednesday at Willow Dale Cemetery with Rev. Martin Armstrong officiating.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sisters, Pamela Gardner Hanlin and husband, James, of Cary and Virginia Gardner Brinson of Wilmington; his nephews, Shawn W. Moye and Kirk J. Hanlin.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Ann Gardner.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasurer, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, Va., 22203; or to the Haw River Assembly, P.O. Box 187, Bynum, N.C., 27228.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Ronald Faulk at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill and Clara Neyhart, transplant nurse coordinator.

Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
