Johnice Grantham Darby, 66, of 206-A Mercer St., died Tuesday, July 18, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Wayne County, the youngest of four children born to Leroy and Viola Grantham.

A member of Dillard Alumni Class of 1957, she furthered her education at North Carolina Central University (1957-1959), Columbia University (1972) and Goldsboro Disciples Institute (1985). She received a bachelor of science degree in business from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1989 and a bachelor's degree in theology from United Christian College in 1992.

She was a certified stenographer and her career included employment with the NYC Transit Authority as a supervisor for five years, secretary for Goldsboro City Schools, an accounting technician at O'Berry Center, and a secretarial position with Whitted, Jordan & Matthewson, attorneys at law. She also served as an instructor at The United Christian College for six years and the Goldsboro Disciples Institute for five years, and as assistant secretary during the 1997-1998 Assemblies. She received may awards including The Governor's Award for Excellence, the N.C.A.E.O.P. Award and the Essie Sutton Award.

In addition to her mother, Elder Viola Grantham of Goldsboro, she is survived by one daughter, Shonnette Grantham of Goldsboro; her three brothers, Rudolph Grantham of Goldsboro, Charles Lee and Elizabeth Grantham of Goldsboro and Joseph Truman and Carolyn Core of Pikeville; aunts and uncles, Sarah Millard of Pikeville and James and Carrie Exum of Goldsboro; two special foster daughters, Natifa and Shaka Taymullah; and a special neighbor, Linda Lamm and her family.

The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Goldsboro Disciple-Institute with Elder Ernest Watson officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

The viewing hours will be on Saturday from 3 until 8 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, Goldsboro.
