Allen Milton Hicks Jr., 58, of Chandler, Ariz., formerly of Pikeville, died unexpectedly on Thursday at his residence.

Mr. Hicks was born in Charlotte to the late A. Milton Hicks Sr. and Mabel Lee Hicks. He grew up in Pikeville and his family owned and operated Pikeville Drug Store. He was a 1966 graduate of Charles B. Aycock High School, where he played football and baseball. He attended North Carolina State University on a football scholarship and graduated in 1970. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a pilot, and later flew as a captain for American West Airlines until his death. His hobbies were golf and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Juliann Manning Hicks; two sisters, Diane Hicks Blake of Hollywood, Md., and Lisa Hicks Hooks of Pikeville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona.
