GREENVILLE -- George "Pops" Koonce, 79, father of Heather Bennett of LaGrange, died Monday at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Rick Vernon officiating.
Mr. Koonce was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of Southwood Memorial Christian Church in Kinston. He was the former owner of Crafts By George and had been employed K & W Cafeteria for many years.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by five other children, George T. Koonce of Greenville, Norma Downie of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Vernon Koonce of Raleigh, James Koonce of Garner and Corey Koonce of Key West, Fla.; a sister, Ruby T. Wood of Jacksonville; and 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will remain at the funeral home to receive friends from 6 until 8, following the memorial service on Wednesday evening.
