ETHEL S. BOWDEN

FAISON --Ethel Spratt Bowden, 98, of Faison, died on Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

The widow of Moseley Carr Bowden, she was born in McDowell County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late James Malet and Fannie Spratt. She was a faithful member of Faison Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder and receiving an Honorary Life Membership in the Women of the Church.

Mrs. Bowden was a 1928 graduate of East Carolina Teachers College where she served for three years as class president. She taught school for two years in Glen Alpine, N.C., and for 35 years in Duplin County. She was a mountain girl who embraced Faison as her home after her marriage to Moseley Carr. She was active in her church and her community and was a dedicated teacher who inspired her students.

Mrs. Bowden was preceded in death by her husband, Moseley Carr Bowden and her daughter, Eleanor Bowden Leonard, her brothers, Ralph and Glenn Spratt, and her sisters, Anne Spratt, Daphne Faison, and Ruby Kendall.

She is survived by her daughter, Anne Moseley Wilson and husband Boyd E. Wilson Jr. of Raleigh. She is also survived by her sisters, Delphia O'Malia, Sybil Spratt, Geneva Craig, and Sarah Cash. Surviving grandchildren are Rebecca Wilson Hester and husband Reece Hester of Raleigh, Boyd E. Wilson III of Raleigh, Mary Beth Wilson Henderson and husband Jeff Henderson of Cary, Katherine Wilson McClanahan and husband Major Brian McClanahan of Bossier City, La., Elizabeth Gillis Smith and husband Brad Smith of Port Elizabeth, Maine, and Glenn Gillis and wife Lisa Gillis of Eugene, Oregon. She leaves to cherish her memory, nine great grandchildren.

The service of witness to the resurrection will be on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at Faison Presbyterian Church, 502 West Main Street, Faison, with the Reverend C. Mark Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Faison Cemetery.
