Roger Coleman Dawson Sr., 73, died Wednesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

The funeral will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Dawson was born in Johnston County to the late Owen Emery Dawson and Myrtie Lillian Moye Dawson. He served in the United States Army and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of Victory Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, trustee, assistant church treasurer and an usher. Mr. Dawson retired from Cherry Hospital in 1994 and worked part-time with Billy Holland Auto Parts for 10 years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and Travelers Protection Association (TPA) and was an avid mall walker.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances Newsome Dawson; one son, Roger "Coleman" Dawson Jr. and his wife, Kimber, of Pikeville; two daughters, Pamela Dawson Howard and her husband, Cecil, of Goldsboro and Vonda Dawson Earp and her husband, Donald, of Princeton; two sisters, Clyde Dawson and Evelyn Dawson Martin of Goldsboro; eight grandchildren, Clint Howell, Cole Dawson, Josh Hause, Forrest Howard, Kameron Howard, Scarlet Howard, Jennifer Howell and Holly Dawson; and two great-grandchildren, Destinee Howard and Trey Sutton.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Dawson was preceded in death by one daughter, Vickie Charlene Dawson, and several brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service on Friday night, and other times at the residence at 2234 US 70 Highway West.
