Phillip Barry Evans, 50, of 112 Whitley Street in Mount Olive, died Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

He was director of operations at E.J. Pope and Son Inc. and its Pope Transport division. While his interests included golf, fishing, and antiquing, his great passion in life was for people.Through his illness, he served as an inspiration for others, constantly stressing the need to embrace life and celebrate both small and large blessings. His illness inspired countless hours of efforst raising money for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, of which he was a member. Dr. Dennis Atwood will officiate. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Turner Evans of Mount Olive; his mother, Doris Baker Evans of Greenville; a sister, Althea McNairy and husband, Syd of Winterville; two brothers, Keith Evans and wife Dorothy of Mount Olive and Steve Evans and wife Debbie of Greenville; and a very special friend, Barbara C. Ward of Mount Olive.

Visitation will be Tuesday night, Jan. 31, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Keith and Dorothy Evans, 213 Crest Drive, Mount Olive.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society (checks should be made to American Cancer Society, noted for Pope "Relay for Life", and mailed to Pope Relay for Life, attn. Anne Letchworth, PO Drawer 649, Mount Olive, NC 28365), or First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 239, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
