JACK H. SMITH

Jack Hamlin Smith, 81, died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thurman Horney officiating

Mr. Smith was born in Daytona Beach, Florida and served three years in the Army Air Corps in World War II where he was assigned to crash boat duty in an Air-Seal Rescue Squadron and achieved the rank of Warrant Officer. He attended the University of Florida on the G.I. Bill and completed a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1950. Mr. Smith was a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., for 38 years. He was department chairman from 1982 until 1986 and retired in 1989. In early 1990, he and his late wife, Roberta Joan Smith, moved to Goldsboro. He was a member of Goldsboro Kiwanis, the Air Force Association and St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Mr. Smith is survived by his second wife, Gayle Flanagan Davis Smith; two sons, Clifford R. Smith and wife, Chiyo, of Mililani, Hawaii, and Lloyd H. Smith and wife, Karen, of Goldsboro; two stepsons, Landy Davis and wife, Donna, of Cary and Lee Davis and wife, Jo Ann, of Goldsboro; and 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
