Emmett Ballree

Emmett William Ballree, 89, of 774 Old Grantham Road, died surrounded by his family on Monday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

Born in Lenoir County and a lifelong resident of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Oscar and Betty Ballree and husband of the late Shirley Strickland Ballree. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in World War II, where he was a Bronze Star Recipient. He was retired from Boling Chair Company in Mount Olive and was a painter for many years.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Justin Heath, the Rev. Chad Smith and the Rev. Joshua Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

A patient and loving man, he is survived by his sons, Emmett F. Ballree and wife Benita of Mt. Olive, Doug Hyatt and wife Jackie of Beautancus, N.C., Robert Williams of Beautancus, N.C.; his daughters, Brenda Grimes and special friend Gary of Grantham, Peggy Pelt and husband Johnnie of Goldsboro, Paulette Powell and husband Johnny of Beautancus, Marie Scott and husband Buddy of Dudley, Phyllis Gurgainous and husband Jerry of Mount Olive; grandchildren, Tammy Travis, Trina Conley, Jaime Gibson (Ben), Tim Wolfe (Amy), Douglas Wolfe, Jeneen Moore (Brad), Jonathan Woodley (Jennifer), Billy Brock, Angela Baker (Shaun), Jay Gurgainous, Lisa Tindal, Mark Tindal, Daniel Tindal, Rhonda Howell, Crystal Hyatt (David), Tracy Pearson (Julius), Sherman Hyatt, Elizabeth Williams, Nicki Williams, Hunter Williams, Mandy Ballree, Michael Ballree, Chad Smith (Lee Ann), Joshua Smith (JoAnn), Philip Smith and Skyler Smith; 22 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and several cousins, in particular Mary Hall.

His beloved daughter, Irene Barber, preceded him in death three weeks ago. He was also preceded in death by his beloved son, Eugene Ballree, his brother, Woodrow Ballree, and his sister, Roberta Capps.

The family will be receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 until 9 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Emmett and Benita Ballree, 152 Crest Drive, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
