RALEIGH -- Ethel Stephenson Briley died Saturday at the age of 90.

The funeral will be held in the chapel at Montlawn Funeral Home at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The Rev. Jack A. Painter will officiate. The family will receive friends at the same location at 2 p.m., prior to the service.

A resident of Alexandria, Virginia, since 1968, Mrs. Briley was born in Willow Springs to Leonard Hassell Stephenson and Alice Cornelia Lassiter. She graduated from Cleveland School and East Carolina Teachers College (1941), now ECU, in Greenville. She taught at Ash, N.C., and lived in Wilmington before moving to Raleigh in 1944. After working for Wachovia Bank, she taught 5th and 6th grades for eight years at Fred A. Olds School. She retired from teaching in 1956 to move to Manila, Philippines, with her husband, the late Frank Elliott Briley, and two young daughters. She spent the next 10 years traveling and living in the Philippines, North Carolina, Maryland and Karachi, Pakistan. After their foreign service with U.S. AID, they returned to the U.S. in 1966, lived two years in Charlottesville, Va., and then moved to the Villamay community of Alexandria, Virginia. She was an active member of First Christian Church of Alexandria.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Whitehouse of Bethesda, Md., and Betsy Pavlovich of Orlando, Fla. two sisters, Lola Delbridge of Goldsboro and Catherine Painter of Raleigh; and six grandchildren.
