CONWAY -- Paul Nelson Lewis, 83, died Monday at his home in

The funeral will be held Friday at noon at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Ahoskie. The Rev. Robert D. Richardson III will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was born in Hertford County to the late Geno and Allie Lewis and was married to the late Ruby Pugh Lewis. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and trustee. He was also a member of the Meherrin Indian Tribe and Union Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia Butler Lewis; three sons, Earl Lewis Sr. (Bettye) of Goldsboro, Thomas Lewis (Daphne) of Ahoskie and George Lewis (Virginia) of Roanoke Rapids; and one daughter, Janet Chavis of Conway; one brother, Frank Lewis of Griffin; three sisters, Dotsie Booker of Griffin and Martha Lassiter and Mary James of Ahoskie, seven stepchildren; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to University Heath Care Hospice, Ahoskie, N.C., 27910.

Hunter's Funeral Home in Ahoskie is serving the family.
