JAMES L. CREECH
July 30, 1915-Nov. 6, 2005
James Leonard "Jimmy" Creech, 90, died on Sunday at his home in Smithfield.
He was born in Selma on July 30, 1915, the youngest child of Parrott Albert and Alice Peacock Creech. He was the brother of the late Paul Creech, Wilbur L. Creech Sr., Alice Creech Phelps and Miriam Creech Stallings.
Mr. Creech is survived by his wife, Vivia Rives Creech; his daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, Brooks Gulledge of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Jim Gulledge and Laura Gulledge; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Frances J. Creech of Goldsboro, widow of Wilbur L. Creech Sr.
He grew up in Goldsboro and graduated from Goldsboro High School and the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy. He was a pharmacist for 51 years and owner of Creech's Pharmacy in Smithfield. He was an active member of the N.C. Pharmaceutical Association and served as past president. He was the recipient of the A.H. Robbins' "Bowl of Hygeia" Award and the N.C. Pharmacist of the Year. He was a member of the Academy of Pharmacy and a National Association of Retail Druggists. Mr. Creech was a member of the committee that established a replica of a 1925 drugstore in the N.C. Museum of History. He served on the board of the Capital Area Health Systems Agency and was a member of the Pharmacy Foundation of the University of North Carolina for 24 years. He served on several community and state organizations and received "The Governor's Award for Outstanding Service."
He was a former member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Goldsboro and was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield, where he served as a teacher of the John Arthur Wallace Class, a lay delegate to the N.C. Annual Conference, and a member of the board of trustees.
The family will receive friends today, Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 4 until 6 p.m. in the chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Centenary United Methodist Church and will be followed with a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Education Foundation of the North Carolina School of Pharmacy or to Centenary United Methodist Church.
