John Eugene "Gene," "Skebo" Westbrook, 71, went to be with his Lord on Monday, March 21, at his home, after a valiant fight with cancer for three years.

He will be sorely missed in his church, family and many friends.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Westbrook and Lou Westbrook Strickland. Gene was retired after over 45 years of service with the Goldsboro News-Argus, where he was production manager.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a son, Ray Westbrook, brothers, Leo, Buck and Harold Westbrook and Danny Strickland, and sisters, Hazel Smith and Elizabeth Elmore.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Helen Frances Westbrook of the home; three sons, "Carr" Westbrook (Suzy) of Daphne, Alabama, John Westbrook, Jr. (Doris) of Brownsville, Nebraska and Michael Gilbert (Sherry) of Four Oaks; daughters, Lee Davis of Pikeville Patricia Doty (Doug) of Abilene, Texas, and Cindy Holcomb of Goldsboro; a sister, Edna Parker of Wilmington; brothers, Horace Westbrook (Bonnie) of Kinston, Mack Westbrook (Frankie) of Orlando, Florida, and Leroy Westbrook (Joyce) of Columbia, South Carolina; and twelve grandchildren.

Gene was a faithful, hardworking member of New Hope Friends Church for twelve years where he served as clerk of ministry and council, Sunday School class president and president of the Quaker Men.

Services will be Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at 7 p.m. at the New Hope Friends Church on U.S. 70 East, with visitation following in the church Family Life Center. Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the New Hope Church Cemetery on Dollard Town Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope Friends Building Fund, 4451 E. U.S. 70 Highway, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
