Lois King Murphy, 83, of River Landing, Wallace, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill following a severe stroke and several years of declining health.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the First Baptist Church of Wallace. The Reverend Dean Beck, pastor of Rose Hill Baptist Church, will lead the service. He will be assisted by Dr. Burkette Raper, President Emeritus of Mount Olive College, and the Reverend Rufus Butner, pastor of Wallace United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow at the Devotional Gardens in Warsaw.

Casketbearers will be her grandsons.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by two sons, Wendell Murphy and wife Linda of Rose Hill and Harry "Pete" Murphy and wife Lynn of Rose Hill, and one daughter, Joyce Minchew and husband Delmar of Wallace.

She was known as "Mamon" to her grandchildren: Angela Brown and husband Robby, Dell Murphy and wife Wendy, Wendy Crumper and husband Kelly, Stratton Murphy and wife Meritxell and Mark Murphy; her stepgranchildren, Cindy Bass, Wesley Hairr and wife Donna, Todd Minchew and wife Maria, Gina Strickland and husband Clay; her adopted grandson, Nick Kukulinski and wife Paula; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She also is survived by three brothers, Eldred King of Carolina Beach, Roy King and wife Pat of Castle Hayne and Stanley King and wife Eleanor of Wallace; and one sister, Elizabeth Hagganbothom and husband Bill of Newport News, Va.

Mrs. Murphy was born in Virginia on September 27, 1921, the daughter of Leslie King and Flonnie Norris King. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Myra Ellen, in 1947, and her husband, Norman Holmes Murphy in 1990. She was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, where she attended regularly until her health declined.

The Murphy family wishes to express their grateful appreciation to their mother's in-home caregivers, Gertie Williams, Eva Taylor, Montrina Boney, Mary McGee and Louise Gore. They also wish to express their gratitude to the doctors who cared for her over many years, Dr. Corazon Ngo of Kenansville, Dr. Daniel Ricci of Wallace and Dr. James Harper and Dr. Ron Falk, both of UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

The family will receive at Mrs. Murphy's home in River Landing, 217 River Ridge Drive, Wallace.
