ELTON WOOTEN

Elton Rudolph Wooten, 75, a retired farmer of 1276 Pikeville-Princeton Road, died Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Wesley and Enness Hicks Wooten. Elton was a lifetime member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church holding many offices. He was an active member of the Pikeville Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department for nearly fifty years serving as an assistant chief, board member, and received training awards for sixteen years.

He was a lifetime member of the Wayne County Fireman's Association and North Carolina Fireman's Association. He received the J.R. Fleming Memorial Fireman of the year in 1998. Mr. Wooten was a tobacconist on the Wilson and Goldsboro markets and was labor foreman for the Centre Brick Warehouse in Wilson for over twenty years. He was former Pikeville Elementary School Advisory Counsel Member and received the Town of Pikeville Citizen of the Year in 2002.

Elton was a former baseball coach for many years in the Pikeville area and was an avid Charles B. Aycock sports supporter. Mr. Wooten was a former employee of Agrevo International in Pikeville. He was a former director of the Wayne County Farm Bureau and former land crop certifier with the ASCA office in Wayne County.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Hollowell and the Rev. Gerald Massey officiating. Burial will follow in Pikeville Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Pittman Wooten; his children, Wesley R. Wooten and wife, Debbie Jones Wooten of Pikeville, and Myra W. Brooks and husband, Army Staff Sgt. Eric Brooks of Pikeville; two grandchildren, Lauren and Jackson Wooten; sister, Olga W. Davis of Patetown; nieces, nephews, and a beloved pet, Whitey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Charles Wesley Wooten and William (Punk) Wooten.

Flowers are welcomed, or memorials may be made to the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church Building Fund, 610 Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, N.C. 27863, or Pikeville Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 457, Pikeville, N.C. 27863.

The family will receive friends Monday evening at 7 at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.
